My Sony Xperia Z Review – Part 3 – Sunlight Visibility, Text, Images and Video

Xperia Z Sunlight Visibility and Viewing Angles

When testing the sunlight visibility on the Xperia Z, I have to say that the results are adequate (much better than the results on my old HTC Touch Pro smartphone). Having said this, I have found out that it is still pretty difficult to use the Z in conditions of bright sunlight. Viewing angles are also not very good, but on the other hand, a smartphone or phablet is not a TV set to be viewed by multiple users at the same time, so in reality I don’t see this as a real issue.

Reading Text on the Xperia Z

The high definition combined with the large display makes the process of reading text on the Xperia Z is a pleasurable experience. The text appears large and crisp and even a very low brightness setting is enough to read and write notes, documents and messages when using the Xperia Z indoors. When using the Z outdoors, a higher brightness setting is normally required.

Images and Video on the Xperia Z

As per the text, images and videos appear crisp and clear on the Xperia Z. One particular option that is unique for Sony mobile phones is the Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2. According to Sony, this is an image quality enhancer for photos and videos. When this option is enabled, images and videos appear brighter; however the pictures and videos appear less sharp and also lose some of the detail in the process, especially when viewing pictures and videos at an angle.

Whether or not is worth using this option is entirely up to the user, however I am not a fan of very bright pictures and videos, so I prefer to leave this option disabled. Having said this, the Bravia Engine might be better suitable for viewing videos in direct sunlight, but I still have not tested this to verify the claim.
