The First Nokia Phablet

Recent rumours suggest that Nokia will soon be placing on the market a 5 inch phablet under the Lumia range. There is no need to say Nokia has passed through fairly turbulent times these last few years. Many were of the opinion that after deciding to get away with Symbian as its operating system of choice, the former number one smartphone producer played a risky gamble by choosing to only produce smartphones running Microsoft’s operating system.

Given that today’s smartphone market is completely dominated by Apple and Android phones (mostly through Samsung), it comes to no surprise that Nokia and Microsoft have a lot of ground to catch up. While the Windows 8 operating system provides a pleasurable user experience, it still lacks the kind of support provided by Apple’s iOS and Android from an application point of view. Today you can find almost any kind of app for iOS and Android, but not the same can be said for Microsoft’s operating system.

Nokia’s current flaghip model, the Lumia 920, is a very good smartphone in its own right. With a screen size of 4.5 inch, its screen is 0.5 inch larger than that of the iPhone 5. However the 920 is still considered to be a medium end phone since it lacks the features, processing power and perhaps also the looks of an iPhone 5, Xperia Z, HTC One and Galaxy S4. The price of the 920 also reflects its placing on the market as a medium end phone. With the introduction of a higher end phablet, Nokia hopes to further cut down the gap that currently exists between itself and the current smartphone giants. No exact release date is available at yet, however it looks highly likely that the first Nokia phablet will be released by the end of 2013.
