The Panasonic P51 – Dubious Specs for a Flagship Phablet

Panasonic has recent released its new flagship phone in India, the Panasonic P51. India’s smartphone marketplace is already very competitive, but Panasonic obviously thinks that it can still be able to play a part in such a competitive market.

The P51 is a 5 inch screen phablet that is 8.5mm (0.18 inches) thick and weighs 135 grams. The HD display supports a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Panasonic states that the screen is scratch resistant being made of Asahi Dragon trail glass. Inside the phone, one can find a 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6589 processor and 1 GB of RAM.

While still being a quad core processor, it is still significantly inferior to the processors of other flagship devices from competing brands. Also it looks strange to me why Panasonic have decided to include 1 GB of RAM, when almost any other flagship phone has at least 2 GB of RAM. Also on the negative side is the fact that only 4 GB internal memory is provided, but luckily this is easily expandable by installing a microSD card, up to a maximum of 32 GB.

The main 8 megapixel camera supports 1080 pixels video recording and includes LED flash. The front camera supports resolutions of 1.3 megapixels. The sensors inside the Panasonic phablet include a compass, proximity sensors, light sensors and an accelerometer. The non-removable battery has a capacity of 2500 mAh. According to Panasonic, the battery will provide up to 23 hours of talk time on a 2G network. The operating system running on the P51 is Android version 4.2 Jelly Bean.

On the positive side is the fact that the P51 supports dual SIMs and dual standby. Also included with the phablet are a stylus and a magnetic flip cover. The official price for the Panasonic P51 is 26,900 Indian Rupees which is equivalent to about US $490, €382 or £313. As one can see, the price is very competitive when compared to the prices being charged by some of Panasonic’s competitors.
