What is a Phablet?

As the name suggests, a phablet is something in between a phone and a tablet. Normally, the term phablet is referred to any smartphone with a display size between 5 inches and 7 inches, though some state that the term phablet refers to any smartphone with a 4.5 inch or larger screen. Most of today’s phablets run the Android operating system, however phablets running Microsoft Windows Phone 8 should be expected in the near future.

Apple’s iPhone 5 has a 4 inch screen size and in view of this, it cannot be considered a phablet. However, rumour is rife that Apple plans to release an iPhone with screen dimensions of 4.5 inches to 4.8 inches in 2014 as well as a smaller iPhone mini with screen dimensions of 3.5 inches or so. On the other hand, Samsung’s now dated Galaxy S3 has a screen size of 4.8 inches. In view of this, it can be considered as a small phablet. Samsung’s flagship for the year 2013, the Galaxy S4 has a screen size of 5 inches, so it is a phablet in every way. The Sony Xperia Z, Sony’s flagship model at the time of writing, also has a screen size of 5 inches.
