Apple Not Currently Interested in Phablet Market

When Apple’s CEO Tim Cook was asked what he thinks of phablets, his reply was that in his opinion the iPhone 5 has the best display currently available on the market. He also said that Apple will not be releasing any form of smartphone with a 5 inch or so screen any time soon. These news somewhat contradict recent rumours which said that Apple was ready to get into the phablet market. Cook said that while other manufacturers made tradeoffs in order to produce smartphones with bigger screens, Apple would not make the same mistake while such tradeoffs still existed.

Cook’s statements are far from the truth and I cannot understand what tradeoffs Apple’s CEO is talking about. Apart from the size, smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S4, Xperia Z and the HTC One have better looking screens when compared to the iPhone 5. As a matter of fact, the screen on the Galaxy S4 as well as that on the Xperia Z has a resolution of 1920 x 1090 and a 441 ppi pixel density.

The HTC One sports the same resolution as that on the Galaxy S4 and Xperia Z but it has a better pixel density of 469 ppi. On the other hand, the iPhone 5 has a much lower resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels and a pixel density of 326 ppi. While it is true that bigger screen and higher resolutions consume higher battery consumption, many manufacturers are integrating bigger capacity batteries in smartphones to overcome this fact.

When one sees that Apple is rapidly losing the market share to Samsung and other smartphone companies, Cook’s statements may be simply a case of sour rolex replica watches grapes. Even if Cook really believes his statements to be correct, the truth remains that one of the reasons why some smartphone users chose to abandon Apple is due to the bigger screens being sported by Apple’s competitors.

The Samsung Galaxy S3, which comes with a 4.7 inch screen, is still a hugely popular phone and the demand for the new Galaxy S4, which has a 5 inch screen but the same footprint as its predecessor, is already very huge. Also hugely popular at the time of writing are the Sony Xperia Z, which has a 5 inch screen and the HTC One, which has a 4.7 inch screen. The fact that users want a bigger screen comes to no surprise considering the fact the majority of smartphone users spend more time playing games, browsing the internet and posting to Facebook and Twitter than the time spent actually doing and receiving phone calls.
